Adidas has unveiled a new eco-friendly line of shoes called the Stan Smith Mylo, named after the material mycelium – or the roots of a mushroom –which is a renewable and innovative substance that can be made to look and feel like real leather, but with no animal cruelty or experimentation.
The mushrooms are reportedly easy to handle and can be grown in less than two weeks in a simple and efficient process.
“The introduction of Mylo as a new material is a major step forward in our bold ambition to help end plastic waste,” said Amy Jones Vaterlaus, global head of future at Adidas. “As a planet, we must learn to work with nature rather than against it and put all our efforts into finding innovative solutions that are created responsibly with resources that renew at a sustainable pace. designed in synergy with earth’s ecosystems. and as a brand, we continue to explore the possibilities in material innovation.”
Adidas said it chose the Stan Smith as its first mold to use the new innovative material on, as it is their simplest and most classical of designs, as well as one of it being an iconic design, enabling the sportswear company to accelerate and upscale rollout, and with it, have a greater environmental impact in a shorter period of time.
This possibly high impactful innovation was only made possible via a partnership with biotechnology company, Bolt Thread.
“By creating the iconic Stan Smith with a mylo material upper, Adidas is demonstrating the far-reaching potential of this innovative material,” said VP of product at Bolt Threads, Jamie Bainbridge “We are thrilled to be working with Adidas in the kind of development partnership that makes innovation a reality. Mylo has the strength and performance it does today thanks to the guidance and deep technical expertise of the adidas team in making great footwear.”
