Isla Del Rey iconic buildings have morphed into an art center by Laplace and Piet Oudolf. The center hosts now the Hauser & Wirth gallery. The gallery is situated in the south of Menorca, on a cozy island.
The project took two years to transform the three buildings into a 1,500 sq meters cultural hub made of gardens, a shop, a restaurant and 8 exhibition spaces. The exhibition spaces are linear and fill up the two bigger buildings.
Laplace wanted the project to highlight the building’s scars. As for the aesthetic, he declares “working for a long time against the white-cube sort of pace." The team went with traditional materials and sourced stones: local masonry, the red-tiled roof and terrazzo floors. The wood beams were renovated and whitewashed. The wood lets slip some parts of the stoned wall, and in other parts are occupied by great windows. For the interiors, Laplace drew inspiration from the island’s heritage, the naval architecture.
Hauser & Wirth gallery took environmentally conscious steps, such as a reservoir that gathers rainwater.
