Commercial giants NIKE recently released the NIKE Air Vapormax 2020 Flyknit, which has left many stunned by its impressive design and the fact that it is made with at least 50 percent recycled content by weight.
This initiative of using recycled material is made possible by a creative implementation of circular design principles in the shoe’s varied elements. Commenting on the idea, Jesi Small, NIKE’s product design lead said: “we wanted to look at not only NIKE’s waste stream but other industrial waste streams and how we could leverage that content. We let that drive a lot of the decision-making.’
NIKE’S design team laid out five implemented methods of circular design. The first-full length vapormax air unit is made with about 75 percent recycled material. The 2020 instalment sees enhancement in comfort and ride.
A lower profile is created with the implementation of a singular, tapered NIKE air unit from heel to toe. The air unit operates as an uncaged and holistic outsole which maintains it’s form through elasticity.
The recycled flyknit yarn is fabricated from recycled plastic bottle and is made from about 67 percent post-industrial recycled content by weight. About 50 percent recycled content was used in making the molded dual-density ortholite sockliner, helping to boost underfoot comfort. For the tongue, at least 80 percent recycled foam was used.
Truly exceptional, the vapormax 2020 flyknit gives an all round perfect, comfortable fit in addition to utilizing sustainable materials.
