Inspired by the shape of a falcon’s wing, Santiago Calatrava has designed a pavilion that reflects the UAE’s pioneering spirit, its national bird, and its local landscape. The ingenious pavilion is located near the center of the site, next to Adrian Smith + Gordon Gill-designed central Al Wasl Plaza.
The main theme of Expo 2020 Connecting Minds, Creating the Future is infused into the four-story pavilion. The locally produced carbon fiber wings of this structure pivot around a single point to open up the entire roof in three minutes, mirroring a falcon in flight, then close to shield the roof solar panels.
Mobility, synchronization, and innovation have come together in the design of this pavilion to create a space that will be in tune with the Expo’s theme. The center of the 15,000-square-meter includes a sphere-shaped cavity that functions as an auditorium that can fit up to200 visitors while also being surrounded by a multi-level gathering space that is overseen by a roof light that incorporates the Dubai Expo’s logo.
The Swiss-Spanish architect has aimed and succeeded at offering visitors a chance to explore both the history and future of the UAE and witness the resilience and values of this nation.
