It seems that Zaha Hadid Architects did not miss the opportunity to join the metaverse trend; the architecture studio created a “cyber-urban” city named Liberland Metaverse in the metaverse, where holders of cryptocurrency are capable of buying plots of lands and accessing digital buildings through their avatar.
According to dezeen, “the virtual city is based on the Free Republic of Liberland – a micronation claimed by Czech politician Vít Jedlička that straddles disputed land between Croatia and Serbia” but will also function as a free standing virtual realm. Patrik Schumacher, the principal of the architectural firm also explained that "The ambition is for it to become the go-to site for networking and collaboration within the burgeoning web 3.0 industry, it's the metaverse for metaverse developers and the crypto ecosystem at large”.
But how can you access this city, you might ask. Liberland Metaverse can be entered through the Mytaverse, which is essentially a cloud-based platform that can be used to create 3D environments such as the one at hand. All of the buildings that are found in it, including the city hall, plaza and exhibition center are characterized by rounded shapes and forms while also defying the concept of gravity seeing that most of them are not supported from the ground.
To add to that, individuals who do decide to buy plots of land in this space will be able to open up their own businesses, but that’s not all! They will also gain stakes in the physical and real Liberland, a state that has its own cryptocurrency called Liberland merit but is still not recognized by international organizations.
Finally, while Schumacher is confident that the metaverse and virtual spaces are the future of the Internet and connections, he is also aware that virtual spaces will always need to co-exist with physical ones, each drawing inspiration from the other.
